Do Reputable Breeders still exist? – 5 Warning Signs To Look For
As a dog dad, finding the perfect dog breeder for your new furry family member is crucial. There are many breeders who are in it for the wrong reasons. But with so many options out there, it can be overwhelming to know who to trust. Here are five warning signs to watch out for when selecting a puppy breeder:
1. Lack of transparency:
A reputable dog breeder should be open and honest about their breeding practices, health testing, and the conditions in which the puppies are raised. If a breeder is not willing to provide this information, it could be a red flag. Does the breeder have a website or social media accounts that explain their qualifications? Do they post about their kennel? A good breeder is transparent about their business.
2. Unwillingness to allow visits:
A responsible dog breeder will welcome potential buyers to their facility to meet the puppies and see where they are being raised. Stay away from breeders who do not have legitimate business documents. It is a serious business and if they do not have the proper documentation they are not serious. If a breeder refuses to allow visits or has proper documentation, it could indicate that they have something to hide.
3. Pushy sales tactics:
Beware of dog breeders who pressure you to make a purchase quickly or try to sell you multiple puppies at once. A reputable breeder will want to ensure that their puppies are going to a good home and will not rush the process. Good breeders also set reasonable prices, most are not willing to drop their prices unless there is a good reason. If you think the price is too much then choose another breeder. If the breeder is negotiating too easily you may want to watch out!
4. Poor reputation:
Do your research and look for reviews or testimonials from other buyers who have purchased from the breeder. If you come across multiple negative reviews or complaints, it may be best to steer clear. In the breeder business reputation is everything, watch their website and or social accounts. If they are constantly talking about prices and how it is not cheap to raise puppies they might be in the wrong business (making them the breeder for you).
5. Overbreeding:
A responsible breeder will not breed their dogs excessively or for profit. Look for breeders who have a limited number of litters each year and prioritize the health and well-being of their dogs. Puppy mills are a problem some breeders care more about the quantity than the quality – a big red flag.
The more research you do, the better the experience will be. There are very good breeders out there, and they will stand out as reputable if you do your research.
